Labradoodle Colors, Sizes & More – Generations Explained
“Labradoodle Colors, Sizes & More.“ A first-generation Labradoodle is the product of Labrador retrievers and Poodle – 50/50 genetic makeup. It is the first generation of the Labradoodle breed. In this particular Labradoodle, cross-hair type can be smooth like a Lab or wiry look like an Irish wolfhound or Wavy/shaggy and shed little. Puppies in the same litter can vary with coat type and physical traits. It is not the best cross for people with severe allergies.
First Generation Hybrids
As first-generation hybrids, these dogs have the added health benefits associated with Hybrid Vigor. It’s a phenomenon in breeding when referring to the first cross-between two unrelated purebreds lines that are healthier and grow better than either parent line.
Maintenance
- Coat Maintenance: Low care
- Coat Description: The coat type grows between 2-3 inches in length and requires occasional combing. Coats are often hair coats; others can have wavy or curly coats.
- Shedding: light to non-shed
- Allergy Friendly and successful in families with mild allergies. The backcross Doodle can help when a family has moderate to severe allergies.
The F1B Labradoodle – Colors, Sizes & More
F1b results when you take the above-referenced F1 Labradoodle and breed it with a Standard poodle. Since the F1 dogs shed and have a wiry course coat, the Poodle is coupled with the F1 Labradoodle to “correct the coat.” The F1b generation can favour a poodle-type with a wavy to curly fleece coat.
F1B Labradoodles Hair Type
Many F1b Labradoodles have soft hair that is wavy to curly. They’re often frosted or highlighted in colour. Their size usually varies between 45-65lbs and are the closest to being a “hypoallergenic” dog. Labradoodles are intelligent and friendly and will help customers with disabilities, such as seeing eye dogs and service dogs, because of their intelligence, size, and strength. F1b’s are the most sought-after generational Labradoodle.
The F1B generation Labradoodles are close to the breeding tree and benefit from hybrid vigour with each generation.
- Coat Maintenance: moderate to high care
- Coat Description: As the coat grows in length, it requires combing and grooming as it is usually thicker and curlier than the first-generation Labradoodle with a wavy or curly Fleece coat.
- Shedding: no shed
- Allergy Friendliness: Back cross Labradoodles are perfect for families with moderate to severe allergies.
The F2B Labradoodles – Colors, Sizes & More
A second-generation backcross puppy F2B results from an F1 Labradoodle bred to an F1B Labradoodle backcross. Three generations, F2B’S are technically second-generation dogs. These Labradoodles are most often non-shedding and are allergy friendly. It is also the first generation of multigenerational Labradoodles
- 1st generation puppy = Lab-Poodle mix Resulting in F1 Pup.
- 1st generation puppy – Labradoodle – Poodle mix results in an F1B Pup.
- 2nd generation pup – Labradoodle back cross – Labradoodle results in an F2B pup.
F2B Hybrid Generations
There is less vigour with the F2B generation than the first. The second backcross is close to the breeding tree to original hybrids to benefit from hybrid vigour generations. With each successive generation, stamina is gone.
- Coat Maintenance: moderate to high care
- Coat Description: The coat continues and grows in length, similar in appearance to a first generations Labradoodle. Coats are wavy or curly.
- Shedding: mostly none
- Allergy Friendly is for families with moderate to very severe allergies.
F3 Generational Labradoodles: An F3 Labradoodle is a mating between an F2 and another F2 or higher generation dog (3rd Gen)
Multi-Generational Labradoodle – Colors, Sizes & More
“Multi-Generational“: A Labradoodle that is three or more generations. They are considered Multi-generational Labradoodles. It allows knowledgeable breeders to refine their personalities, physical attributes, and coat types. The Multi-generational Labradoodle is allergy friendly and has a more desirable coat with texture and quality.
Coat Maintenance: Moderate to High Care
Coat Description: The coat continues to grow in length and requires daily combing and occasional “grooming.“ Its skin is thicker than first-generation and has a curly, fleece or wavy coat type, which is the most desirable and saute after.
Shedding: almost all are entirely non-shedding.
Allergy Friendliness: Multi-generational Labradoodles are great for families with moderate to severe allergies.
“Coats Types”
Woolly Coat: Poodles require regular grooming and are non-shedding, allergy and asthma friendly to people suffering from breathing issues.
Fleece Coat: The ultimate coat is easy to maintain, non-shedding, allergy, asthma friendly, and resembles the Angora.
Hair Coat: Between flat or straight with curls down the back, beautiful wavy and minimally shedding, and less likely to cater to allergy and asthma friendly.
Coats in General: Labradoodles require minimal bathing and brushing and rarely attract fleas.

Have you ever wondered how Labradoodle coat colours are determined? They get their coat colours from their parent. Whatever coat colour they end up with will result in either a dominant or a recessive gene coat. Sounds confusing? It is not complicated because they get their coat colour like humans get their eye colours.
Color Gene Dominant
Every Labradoodle puppy has two coat-colour genes. They get one from each parent. How the two genes interact will determine the puppies’ coat colour. Dominant genes have a more substantial presence than recessive genes. To have a recessive gene, you will need two recessive genes, one from each parent. Some coat colours, like black and red, are dominant genes, while browns and silvers tend to be recessive. Although it sounds complicated, it’s not to an experienced breeder who studies and researches genetics and breeding.
COAT GROOMING – Colors, Sizes & More
The Labradoodles coat will shed even if brushed regularly, so owners will need to buy brushes and comb more frequently and decrease the amount of hair.
Hair coats will vary between Wavy, Curly, or straight hairs, which can also determine which comb and brush you will use.
What type of brush should you use? All Labradoodle dogs will benefit from a slicker brush regardless of coat type. Best of all, it’s self-cleaning by Pushing a button, and hair trapped in the bush will pop out.
A dual-purpose steel comb like the Slicker brush is ideal for doodle coats.
FLEECE COAT GROOMING
The fleece-coated Labradoodle will have a coat of average fleece or micro-fine fleece. It’s considered asthma and an allergy-friendly dog that needs a brush thoroughly and regularly to keep it that way.
The average fleece coat should be brushed 2-3 times a week and trimmed 3-4 times a year, depending on the desired look.
The super soft fleeced dog needs a brush that prevents matting and keeps asthma and allergy-friendly issues at bay. A coat that gets over 3 inches becomes more difficult to maintain properly.
WOOL COAT GROOMING
A wool coat is like authentic fur, soft like a lamb, and must be brushed or combed thoroughly at least once a week and trimmed three or four times a year.
The cotton wool coat has a softer texture than the original and is super thick. It’s the most successful in being allergy friendly and requires brushing once a week and a haircut four times a year.
Labradoodles can have baths once a week or as needed. Bathing more often, depending on how much time the dog spends outside.
Be sure to use high-quality shampoo so their coat stays healthy. I suggest an Oatmeal Shampoo and Conditioner.
The hair-coated Labradoodle generally needs the most frequent bathing to avoid odours.
